Metal Observer (CAN)
The last time I received Melodic Death Metal from Austria the experience was a quite pleasant one. DEVANIC was the band; a band I hope will release their first full length any time soon. This time it’s PERISHING MANKIND who has the “pleasure” to be reviewed by me. “Fall Of Men” is the debut of this Austrian band and I can say right away that I like what I’m hearing. It seems that Austrian Melodic Death Metal bands are anxious to ensure that the music they play deserves to be called Death Metal, meaning that they don’t forget that this kind of music shall hold some aggression. Of course it’s not aggression like you’ll find in a band like CANNIBAL CORPSE, but at least there is something to bang ones head to here.t’s evident that the members of PERISHING MANKIND aren’t the most skilled musicians out there, not meaning that they sound sloppy, it’s just that the technical skills that many band possesses are quite astonishing. As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews tremendous playing skills don’t mean that the actual music will be any good. For that to happen you have to know how to write good songs as well, a task I think PERISHING MANKIND handles well. The good production helps the band along the way, especially the guitar sound appeals to me, good crunch in that department. As with most of the Metal bands in this world I think that PERISHING MANKIND could have had the bass guitar a bit higher in the mix, but since this is a general problem with Metal bands I won’t be deducting any points for that. My biggest complaint when it comes to PERISHING MANKIND is the clean vocals. I approve the idea of using clean vocals to ensure some variation in the music; I just don’t think that they hold the same quality as the rest of the vocals. The rest of the vocals are Death growls and Black shrieks and as I just said they are handled very well. One thing that sets PERISHING MANKIND apart from many bands out there, though not affecting the music as I can hear, is the fact that they have a female doing the drums. I’m sure there are other females out there who play the drums but I can’t mention anyone on the fly.I haven’t seen the birth certificate of any of the band members but judging from the pictures they look quite young. Therefore I believe the odds are good for PERISHING MANKIND to develop from the foundation they have made with “Fall Of Men”. Even on their debut they are able to make songs that one remembers after the CD is finished, not all bands are able to do that. I would also like to add that PERISHING MANKIND doesn’t sound particularly Swedish; there is more than one way to play Melodic Death Metal. When it comes to Melodic Death Metal I like it best the way DEVANIC and PERISHING MANKIND plays it; recommended, both of them. (Online February 7, 2006)
Als ich das letzte Mal Melodic Death Metal aus Österreich erhielt, war die Erfahrung eine ziemlich erfreuliche. DEVANIC war die Band; eine Band, die hoffentlich in absehbarer Zeit ihr erstes Full-Length veröffentlichen wird. Dieses Mal sind es PERISHING MANKIND, die die „Freude“ haben, von mir reviewt zu werden. „Fall Of Men“ ist das Debüt dieser österreichischen Band, und ich kann direkt sagen, dass ich mag, was ich höre. Es scheint, als wären österreichische Melodic-Death Metal-Bands darauf bedacht sicherzustellen, dass die Musik, die sie spielen, es verdient, als Death Metal bezeichnet zu werden, was bedeutet, dass sie nicht vergessen, dass diese Musik einige Aggression enthalten sollte. Natürlich ist es nicht Aggression wie ihr sie in einer Band wie CANNIBAL CORPSE finden werdet, aber zumindest gibt es hier etwas zum Headbangen.Es ist offensichtlich, dass die Mitglieder von PERISHING MANKIND nicht die fähigsten Musiker da draußen sind, was nicht heißt, dass sie schlampig klingen, es ist nur so, dass die technischen Fähigkeiten, die viele Bands besitzen, ziemlich verblüffend sind. Wie ich in vorigen Reviews erwähnte, heißen enorme spielerische Fähigkeiten nicht, dass die eigentliche Musik gut sein wird. Damit das eintritt, muss man auch wissen, wie man gute Songs schreibt, eine Aufgabe, die PERISHING MANKIND, wie ich finde, gut erledigen. Die gute Produktion hilft der Band dabei, besonders der Gitarrensound spricht mich an, guter Crunch in dieser Abteilung. Wie bei den meisten Metal-Bands auf dieser Welt finde ich, dass PERISHING MANKIND die Bassgitarre ein bisschen höher im Mix hätten lassen können, aber da das ein allgemeines Problem bei Metal-Bands ist, werde ich dafür keine Punkte abziehen. Meine größte Beschwerde, was PERISHING MANKIND betrifft, sind die klaren Vocals. Ich billige die Idee, klare Vocals zu benutzen, um einige Abwechslung in der Musik sicherzustellen; Ich finde nur nicht, dass sie dieselbe Qualität besitzen wie der Rest der Vocals. Der Rest der Vocals sind Death-Growls und Black-Schreie, und wie ich gerade sagte, sind sie gut gesungen. Eine Sache, die PERISHING MANKIND von vielen Bands da draußen abhebt, obwohl sie in meinen Ohren die Musik nicht beeinflusst, ist die Tatsache, dass eine Frau die Drums bedient. Ich bin sicher, dass es da draußen weitere Frauen gibt, die Schlagzeug spielen, aber aus dem Stegreif fällt mir keine ein.Ich habe keine Geburtsurkunde von irgendeinem der Bandmitglieder gesehen, aber nach den Bildern zu urteilen sehen sie ziemlich jung aus. Deshalb glaube ich, dass die Chancen gut stehen, dass PERISHING MANKIND sich von dem Fundament aus, dass sie mit „Fall Of Men“ geschaffen haben, weiterentwickeln. Schon auf ihrem Debüt sind sie in der Lage, Songs zu schreiben, an die man sich erinnert, wenn die CD vorbei ist, nicht alle Bands sind in der Lage, das zu tun. Ich würde auch gerne hinzufügen, dass PERISHING MANKIND nicht besonders schwedisch klingen; es gibt mehr als eine Art, Melodic Death Metal zu spielen. Was Melodic Death Metal anbelangt, so mag ich die Art am liebsten, wie DEVANIC und PERISHING MANKIND ihn spielen; empfehlenswert, beide von ihnen. (Online 7. Februar 2006)I
